CHERRY TOMATOES FROM JENNY'S GARDEN

Starting from seeds in a packet, Jenny grew a few cherry tomato plants in our backyard. In the late winter or early spring, she started the seeds in a small container with fertilized soil. She put them behind our kitchen sink where we have a greenhouse window. Over the course of weeks, she sprinkled water on the the dirt from time to time. Even though Jenny did something like this just about every spring, she was always excited when a seedling emerged.

When the seedling grew to plant that was about 10 to 12 inches tall, it was time to move it to the backyard. The plant needed to be gently tied to a post or cage, otherwise it would flop over. Jenny put the one pictured near a drip system and she never needed to worry about it again. Shown here are just a few of hundreds of cherry tomatoes yielded from one plant--one seed actually!

We will save seeds from these tomatoes with hopes of getting more seedlings next year. We probably won't be able to match Jenny's performance but it won't be for lack of trying!
